The Complete Toyota Prius Battery Guide for Kelowna Owners

Everything Prius owners in the Kelowna area need to know about hybrid battery maintenance, costs, and getting the best replacement service.

The Complete Toyota Prius Battery Guide

The Toyota Prius is by far the most common hybrid vehicle on Kelowna roads — and consequently the hybrid battery we replace most often. Here's everything you need to know.

Prius Generations and Their Battery Differences

Gen 1 (2001–2003): NiMH, 38 modules. Rare now but we still service them.

Gen 2 (2004–2009): NiMH, 28 modules. Most common vehicle we service. Battery packs last 150,000–250,000 km typically. Replacement from $1,299.

Gen 3 (2010–2015): NiMH, 28 modules. Very reliable. Replacement from $1,399.

Gen 4 (2016–2023): NiMH (plug-in uses Li-ion). Replacement from $1,499.

Common Prius Battery Failure Signs

  • Red triangle warning light
  • "READY" light won't illuminate
  • Drops in MPG (typically from 4–5L/100km to 7–9L/100km)
  • Battery gauge bouncing erratically
  • Loud cooling fan operation
  • How Long Should a Prius Battery Last?

Properly maintained, a Gen 2 Prius battery should last 200,000–250,000 km. We've seen well-maintained Gen 2 batteries at 350,000+ km still at 80% SOH.
