Buying a Used Hybrid? Here's the Battery Check You Must Do First

Used hybrids can be incredible value — or a costly mistake. A $99 battery health check before purchase could save you from an expensive surprise.

The Pre-Purchase Hybrid Battery Check

Used hybrids are proliferating on the BC used car market, and for good reason — a well-maintained hybrid can provide excellent fuel economy and reliability for 300,000+ km. But one hidden factor can turn a great deal into an expensive nightmare: a failing hybrid battery.

Why Sellers Don't Always Disclose Battery Issues

Some sellers genuinely don't know their battery is degraded — reduced fuel economy happens gradually and a basic OBD-II scan won't reveal battery health. Others know and choose not to disclose. Either way, you need to verify independently.

What Our Pre-Purchase Battery Health Test Covers

For $99, we'll provide:

  • State-of-health (SOH) score as a percentage
  • Individual module voltage balance across all cells
  • Capacity test under real-world load conditions
  • Estimated remaining useful life
  • A written report you can use in price negotiations
  • The Math Works In Your Favour

If a seller is asking $8,000 for a Prius and our test reveals the battery needs replacement ($1,299+), you have two options:

  • Negotiate the price down accordingly
  • Walk away
  • Either way, the $99 test paid for itself many times over.

How to Book a Pre-Purchase Inspection

Arrange with the seller to bring the vehicle to our Kelowna shop, or ask the seller to drive it to us. If neither is possible, our mobile service can meet you at the seller's location (within 30 km of Kelowna) for a small additional fee.

Book online or call us — we can usually accommodate pre-purchase inspections within 24–48 hours.
